Gilead is the mountainous region east of the Jordan between Bashan to the north and Moab and Ammon to the south. It is important as a fertile transjordanian territory held by Israelite tribes, as a setting for conflict, refuge, and trade, and as a place remembered for both its strategic value and its healing balm. First appears in Gen 31:21.1
