Canaan is the land west of the Jordan and the Dead Sea that becomes the promised land in Israel's story. It is important because it forms the geographic heart of the covenant promises to Abraham's descendants and the setting for conquest, settlement, kingship, prophecy, exile, and return. First appears in Gen 11:31.1
