Moab lies east of the Dead Sea and south of Ammon in the highlands beyond the Jordan. In the Bible it is important as the land and people descended from Lot, as a recurring neighbour and rival of Israel, and as the setting for stories ranging from Balaam and Balak to Ruth's return into the family line of David. First appears in Gen 36:35.1
