Summary
Reformed compatibilism denies that freedom requires the power to act independently of God’s providence. God ordains all that comes to pass without coercing creatures or becoming the author of sin; people make real choices flowing from their character and desires. Saving grace changes the heart so that the called person comes willingly to Christ.
What this contributes
It gives strong weight to biblical language of election, predestination, divine purpose, and effectual calling while retaining moral responsibility and the ordinary use of preaching, prayer, and decision.
Question to keep in view
This view must explain how responsibility remains meaningful under an exhaustive decree and how God’s relation to sinful actions differs sufficiently from his relation to good actions.
